Last week, the Government of Canada launched the Language Portal of Canada and free access to its Termium terminology database.

Designed to be a showcase for the French and English languages in Canada and promote the use of our official languages from Newfoundland to British Colombia, the Language Portal features sections on dictionary resources, language use in Canada (official and other), language professions (including translation, interpretation, writing and editing), and a special section on la Francophonie in Canada and internationally. The site also provides information on everything from grammar and spelling, to proverbs, punctuation and typography, as well as links to a Clear and Effective Communication section on the Translation Bureau’s main site.

Managed by the Translation Bureau, the Language Portal of Canada website offers integrated access to Termium, a terminology database with almost four million specialized French and English terms. Termium is an indispensable resource for English-French and French-English translators around the world, and news that it was now available free of charge caused considerable excitement in language and translation circles over the past few days. (Access to Termium has long been restricted to a paid subscription, and this is the first time it has been offered to the general public free of charge.)

With weekly updates, the Language Portal of Canada is sure to become an invaluable and up-to-date one-stop resource for language professionals working in French, English or some combination of the two, so check it out! We look forward to seeing what the site has to offer.
